2. UNDP-Gender Justice through Eliminating Acid Violence
This project aims to prevent acid attacks and mitigate the effects of acid violence, through
- raising awareness about treatment,
- enhancing legislative protection for victims; and punishing the perpetrators of acid attacks,
- through legal assistance to survivors.
The project assumes that an awareness raising campaign will lead to a reduction in the severity of acid attacks. It also assumes that field officers conducting the campaign will be accepted by the community, an assumption which is justified by the strong rapport which they have developed with local authorities and the community in the Seraiki belt. The project assumes that competent lawyers are available and willing to assist in providing legal aid to acid survivors. The project assumes that the safety conditions will not worsen for the ASF field officers who work in the Seraiki belt.
It is intended to:
- Conduct awareness raising activities for local communities and stakeholders, empowering communities as far as acid first aid treatment is concerned;
- Develop a network of lawyers to provide legal follow-up, advice and assistance to victims of acid attacks.
- Involve politicians, media and civil society organizations to improve awareness about acid violence with a view to passage of the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Bill; and implementation of existing legal framework;
3. UNIFEM- Situation Analysis of Acid Survivors in the Seraiki Belt, Pakistan
ASF-Pakistan conducted a comprehensive situation analysis concerning acid survivors, which aimed to not only verify the occurrence of acid attacks, but also to identify potential partners (doctors, medical facilities, community based organizations, district authorities) who can be called upon with regards to notification, awareness raising and prevention.
4. A Burning Truth
This project has specific objectives: raise awareness among the Pakistani youth about the prevailing issue of acid violence as a worst form of domestic violence, torture and breach of human rights, and sensitize them to stand by for the cause and say No to such violence among the Society.
Young people are an integral part of any movement: they contribute to its uniqueness and identity. As a movement, the capacity of young people can act as transformational catalyst. Since Pakistani young people have demonstrated their abilities by shouldering responsibilities for change within contemporary realities, ASF-Pak has developed the Burning Truth Program, a touring Kathak and Sufi Dance performance, as an effort to deliver the message to the youth to involve them in the elimination of acid violence and to get their support for the rehabilitation of acid burn survivors. For this program, arts are used as a universal language that can convey the message beyond any border.
